Course Overview

The Pilot Instructor Rating allows you to undertake the highly satisfying role of teaching others how to fly, whether that be students just starting out or more advanced operations such as multi-engine IFR.

We offer training for you to achieve a Rating with the following training endorsements:

  • Grade Three (3)
  • Grade Two (2)
  • Grade One (1)
  • Design Feature
  • Night VFR
  • Instrument
  • Multi-engine Class Rating
  • Formation Flight
  • Instructor

The Grade 3 Training Endorsement

This is the entry level for the professional instructor.  Unless you have a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment or a tertiary qualification in teaching, your training will start with a theory course on the principles and methods of instruction.  You will then move into learning how to structure and deliver ground and flight training.

Full time courses run for approximately eight weeks.

Minimum Requirements

  • Pass in the Pilot Instructor Rating Common Examination (PIRC)
  • Commercial Pilot Licence
  • Current medical
  • 200 hours flight time as a pilot1
  • 100 hours flight time as pilot in command1

The Flight Test

At the completion of your training for pilot instructor training you will be tested. Our Testing officer will need to spend a good part of the day with you to test your general knowledge around pilot instruction. If you pass the theory, you will then demonstrate your skills in delivering lessons on the ground and in the air.
